Boosting Emotion Regulation

I have expertise in treating individuals who are having difficulty regulating emotions, such as anxiety, sadness, anger, and shame. Difficulty regulating emotions is a transdiagnostic risk factor that plays a role in a range of challenges, including anxiety disorders, depression, alcohol and drug use disorders, eating disorders, and chronic pain. I have expertise treating these conditions by helping individuals improve their ability to regulate their emotions in healthy and effective ways.

My Core Treatment Approaches

In my clinical practice, I use three major treatment approaches that are effective in helping people regulate their emotions better. This includes: cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Typically, I draw upon all three of these approaches when working with clients. I find that each approach offers unique and helpful tools that can be tailored to meet your specific needs and preferences.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A goal-oriented approach that focuses on modifying unhelpful relationships between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You will learn how to identify unhelpful thoughts patterns, challenge these thoughts, and replace them with more realistic and helpful thoughts. You will learn other coping skills, such as relaxation techniques, communication skills, problem solving skills, activity planning, and goal setting.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Focuses on developing nonjudgmental acceptance and openness towards challenging emotions. Through this acceptance, you will learn to tolerate emotions better and respond to them in healthy ways, instead of engaging in unhealthy efforts to get rid of emotions (such as suppression, substance use, or eating disorder behaviors). Mindfulness-based therapy often involves mindfulness meditation as a way to develop mindfulness skills. Finally, mindfulness-based therapy involves learning to stay in the present moment and practicing the skill of savoring positive experiences.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Focuses on developing more awareness of deep, unconscious thoughts, emotions, and memories—as well as understanding how these experiences affect your current behavior. This approach emphasizes the exploration of early childhood experiences and attachment patterns. Additionally, this approach involves an examination of defensive mechanisms–often used to avoid difficult feelings and situations—and how to respond more effectively to these experiences.
